I should have called this a "Jiffy" radio. I like Jif peanut butter.
As I was nearing the bottom of the container, I thought that this would make a cheap
and simple little
crystal set. After going to a local hamfest where they were showing kids how to build
a simple
crystal set radio, I had to become a kid again.
As you can tell, I didn't spend a lot of time or money on this radio. The
variable capacitor is a triple gang type. Only a 2 gang is needed here. But make
sure the capacitor you pick will fit inside the cap, even with the plates open.
The coil is 31 turns of 40/44 litz wire close wound on the outside of
the jar. The diameter of the jar is 3-7/8 inches (9,8 cm). There are 3 small
holes drilled where the winding starts and 3 more where they end. The sets
of holes are just under 5/8 inches (13 mm) apart. The 3 holes at each end
do a good job holding the wire ends.
You can use 26 or 28 gauge magnet wire instead of the litz. Larger sizes
can be used if you increase the number of turns on the coil. There is
a lot of room on the form. I wound the coil as far to the bottom of the
container as I could. I didn't want the metal on the variable capacitor
to interfere with the coil.
